I was warmly welcomed by the agency in Varna. However, that was short-lived, and in fact there were various happy stories, and I decided to go north to Odessa in Ukraine. However, I was given the option of how to get there again, so I thought I would go by bus instead of plane if I had the chance.
However, as those who are familiar with the area will know, it is actually surprisingly difficult to enter Odessa by land.
In my opinion, this is probably due to the fact that the relationship between Bulgaria and Romania is not that friendly. I know I'm probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but I think the main reasons are that the Danube River is in the way, and that the two countries are completely different in terms of language. For that reason, when you enter Romania from the east by bus, you have to go via Русе or Mangalia. Also, there aren't many buses. And while there is a train in Русе, you can't get to or from the Black Sea coast by train.
However, once you're in Romania, the railway network and bus routes are well-developed, so we'll head for the nearby ancient city of Constanța/Constanta first (it's also quite difficult to enter Ukraine from Romania, but we'll talk about that another time).
So I looked up the bus routes, and there are no buses from Varna to Constanta (there is a service by the companyMercado Sud, but the information on the bus stop in Varna and the time of departure is only half-written, so I'm too scared to use it. The bus stop is in front of the cathedral). Therefore, to get to Constanta, you would have to get off the bus at some point along the way on a bus bound for Odessa, Chișinău/Chisinau, Kiev or Moscow. This is a safe option, as the buses depart from the central bus terminal.
However, the departure days are limited. There are 1pm and 2pm departures, with the former leaving on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and the latter on Tuesdays and Saturdays. On the internet
there is also a bus to Chisinau that only leaves on Tuesdays and is an overnight service.
There is also a bus to Bucharest, but this does not pass through Constanta.
These are night trains to Kiev and Moscow. If I was really going, I would have taken one of these, but since Constanta isn't that far away, I decided to skip this one.
So, I went to the terminal in Varna to buy a ticket, and when I went into a random ticket booth, the old man there said that they would sell tickets on the day. He told me not to worry because it wasn't crowded, so I left. I wonder if that's true.
